Children are very perceptive, still learning how to manage their thoughts and feelings, and are deeply influenced by events in their lives. They are also strong, intelligent, and wonderfully resilient as they grow and develop into adults.
Sometimes, life brings circumstances that are overwhelming for your child or you notice your child having a difficult time despite your best efforts to help. My therapy with children provides a fun, friendly place for them to explore and talk about their stressors, learn, and practice new skills. Children identify, process, and express their emotions differently than adults. My work with kids utilizes art, games and imagination as tools for helping them communicate about and overcome their struggles.
Teenagers have mastered some of their childhood struggles, but are facing a whole new set of challenges related to peer influence and acceptance, gaining independence, and defining their sense of self.
Often teenagers find it difficult to be completely open and honest with their parents. Having an adult who is not an authority figure to talk to can be helpful for them to work through their problems. I provide a safe environment, free of house rules and consequences, where they can be truly honest. I will teach new skills and coping strategies and provide practice opportunities for them to master these new techniques. I will also challenge the behaviors and thought patterns that may be the cause of their current struggles.
Please know that you are a critical part of my work with your child. Your expertise on your child, your help and support with the skills they are learning and practicing are very important to your child's success and change. While I will always respect your child's privacy, I will work to keep you informed of our progress and involved in the therapy process as we go along.
